Location
About Moraira
Moraira
Moraira is a small coastal town situated on north-eastern tip of the Costa Blanca. It is situated between Calpe and Javea, with the busy Spanish working town of Denia to the north. It is conveniently placed between the airports of Alicante and Valencia (about 90km from each) and Ace Holidays Spain would be happy to help you arrange either a hire car or transfer from either airport.
Formally a simple fishing village, Moraira is now a small yet busy holiday and retirement resort with residents and visitors from all over the world. It’s also particularly popular with Spanish holidaymakers from Madrid and Valencia.
Moraira has an impressive marina, an excellent variety of local shops, markets, harbourside fish restaurants and bars, and best of all has still managed to preserve its Spanish character.
Beaches
There are two main local sandy beaches, that gently shelve away into the Mediterranean Sea; both have been awarded the prestigious EEC Blue Flags for cleanliness and are well-tended and very safe for family bathing. Moraira Beach and El Portet Beach are both well worth visiting during your stay.
Leisure & recreation
This area has many sporting and leisure opportunities to enjoy during your stay. There is golf (three courses locally), padel tennis, all water sports, boat hire and trips, horse-riding, go-kart racing tracks for both adults and children, a small fairground, and several live music venues for all ages are all available in Moraira.
Excursions
Easily reached by car are some larger towns which are well worth visiting: Javea, Calpe, and Denia. There are many places of interest to see on day excursions other than the vast array of beaches including hiking in the mountains, and discovering the wonderful mountain-top fortress of Guadalest, Take a trip to Algar and you can dive into the natural waterfalls and then after your swim, if you have little ones who love dinosaurs then visit the impressive DinoPark. There are several waterparks near Benidorm which are 30km away, called Aqua Natura and Aqualandia.
Valencia (the third largest city in Spain) is one and a half hours away and Barcelona (the second largest) and the capital Madrid are both four hours away and can all be reached on the excellent motorway.
Markets
If you like open markets then, aside from the weekly Friday market held next to the beach, you could plan a visit every day of the week to the various markets held in neighbouring towns and villages. If you are looking to experience larger markets there are several in Benidorm that are well worth a visit.
Fiestas
As in all of Spain, there are numerous fiestas (festivals) held throughout the year in the region; with specific festivals held in April, June, July, and November in Moraira itself.
Climate
Moraira enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with cool sea breezes in summer and protection by surrounding mountains against the cold North winds in winter. The area averages nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature easily exceeds 20 degrees.
In 1986 the World Health Organisation recommended the climate of the area as one of the most equitable in the world – neither too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter. On average it can boast 325 sunny days each year making it an ideal all year-round destination.
